Nature on the Hill

BC Nature is headed to Ottawa for the annual Nature on the Hill event!

National ENGO, Nature Canada, brings nature groups from across Canada to meet with MPs and Ministers about local and national priorities related to biodiversity, marine and terrestrial conservation, and local concerns

BC Nature respectfully acknowledges that our work takes place across the homelands of many Indigenous Peoples throughout what is now known as British Columbia. These lands and waters have been cared for and intertwined with the lives of diverse First Nations since time immemorial, each with their own unique histories, languages, and relationships with the natural world. Our headquarters are in North Vancouver, on the unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Tsleil-Waututh, Só’lh Téméxw (Stó:lō), and xwməθkwəy̓ə  (Musqueam) Nations. North Vancouver, November 2025.

This year, Nature Canada’s annual Nature on the Hill connects dozens of nature groups with Members of Parliament to push for investment in nature as part of Canada’s identity.

“Nothing is more important to Canadians’ sense of who we are than nature,” says Emily McMillan, Executive Director at Nature Canada. “We’re bringing that message to Ottawa from the people and groups who protect and restore nature in their communities every day. Nature on the Hill really is democracy in action – bringing community voices for nature to be heard, understood, and considered as part of the nation-building moment we’re in now.”

BC Nature is excited to take our mission to Ottawa as part of Nature on the Hill,” says Nancy Flood, President of BC Nature, “It’s inspiring to be part of a bigger movement with a common purpose and voice. We hope we get our message across on behalf of nature; a major goal of this event is to ensure  government commits to funding protection of species at risk and habitat restoration—both of which figure prominently in the Liberal Party’s election platform and in their Nature Strategy, which was released last year LINK

In the last federal election, many parties made strong commitments to nature protection and the execution of Canada’s 2030 Nature Strategy. But shifting priorities at the federal level mean that nothing can be taken for granted. Nature on the Hill provides a chance for Nature Canada’s “Nature Network” organizations to add their voices and perspective to this national conversation. BC Nature is part of the “Nature Network” comprising over 1,200 partners including local and regional naturalist groups, businesses, faith groups and more – all united to protect and restore nature.

The public is also expecting action. Nature Canada and local partners have mobilized tens of thousands of Canadians around Nature on the Hill to urge the government to deliver on its promises, make bold investments in conservation, and build our shared culture and identity around nature.
