British Columbia’s rich, biodiverse natural landscapes are under threat, and the urgency to act has never been greater.

The province has a commitment to ambitious environmental goals, like protecting 30% of our land by 2030, yet, the progress needed simply won’t happen without action from individuals, communities, and grassroots efforts.

Together, we can create change from the ground up—by growing a community that advocates for nature, actively cares for critical habitats and takes the steps necessary to prevent species extinction.

How the Naturalist Community is Protecting Biodiversity

Taking action at a local level: We believe in the power of collective action to drive meaningful change. Our network of 50+ Nature Clubs across BC meet regularly to build a community of naturalists and work together on conservation projects that bring awareness to local environmental issues and improve the health of ecosystems.

Identifying and protecting critical habitats: The Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) program is a science-based initiative, mobilizing volunteers and building relationships with Indigenous communities to identify, monitor, and conserve vital habitats essential to biodiversity and wildlife populations.

Working towards the 30 x 30 target: Through the Municipal Protected Areas Project (MPAP) we assess existing protected areas, collaborate with local nature clubs to monitor ecological health and identify new natural areas of importance. Club members immerse themselves in surveying, meetings, and hands-on volunteering.

How Your Gift Makes an Impact

  • Supports local and global conservation projects by working directly with communities, local governments, and Indigenous partners to identify, monitor and protect important natural areas and at-risk species.
  • Grows our network of naturalist clubs and partners across BC, ensuring every community has a voice in protecting our landscapes and wildlife.
  • Amplifies grassroots advocacy efforts to push for bolder conservation policies from industry and government, aligning with our ambitious 30 x 30 goals.

Thank you for being a part of the naturalist community and protecting BC’s Biodiversity!

Legacy and Endowment Fund contributions
BC Nature works in close partnership with the BC Naturalists’ Foundation, a distinct nonprofit society that builds and manages an endowment fund for the future of BC’s naturalist community. Gifts to the Foundation are invested, with the annual earnings currently providing funding for naturalist-led conservation and education projects throughout the province.
