Tidal marsh ecologist, Eric Balke, will be delivering a presentation entitled “Rising Sea Levels, the Fraser Estuary and Our Future, on November 12th. The Fraser River is the largest river meeting the west coast of Canada, and the Fraser estuary contains internationally important fish, wildlife and ecosystems. Though the estuary has been heavily modified by ongoing development and industrial activities, sea-level rise poses a great threat to both local communities and tidal ecosystems throughout the estuary. However, there are ways in which to harness the ecosystem-building capacity of the estuary and incorporate ecosystems into our coastal flood protection defenses.

As the coordinator of the South Coast Conservation Land Management Program, Eric Balke is the province’s point-person for managing provincial conservation lands throughout the BC South Coast, including the Sturgeon Bank, Roberts Bank, South Arm Marshes, Boundary Bay, and Serpentine Wildlife Management Areas.
