Adapting Together: A Handbook for Climate Resilience in B.C.

How can a naturalists and their club help its community adapt to a changing climate? Adapting Together: A handbook for Climate Resilience, offers a practical starting point. It explains how protecting and restoring nature can help reduce risks from heat, drought, flooding, and wildfire while supporting wildlife and biodiversity through Nature Based Solutions.

This handbook is essentially in two parts; chapters 1-4 is about the WHY to do projects, and the rest deals with the HOW to do projects. If readers are already convinced of the WHY, they can go directly to the HOW

Start with the landscape and climate concern most relevant to your club. The action toolkit explores forests, wetlands and streams, watersheds, coastlines, and urban nature, with examples from B.C., elsewhere in Canada, and beyond. When an idea seems promising, discuss your club’s capacity, learn about local priorities, and connect early with the Indigenous Nation, landowner, local government, and other partners involved. The later sections guide you through setting a manageable goal, securing permissions and support, monitoring results, and planning for ongoing care. A project worksheet and seasonal calendar can help turn that first conversation into a local plan.  It would be great to work with another club in your region to see some of the project/planning come to fruition (and lighten the load – teamwork is dreamwork!)
